Over 10,000 years ago, Norway lay beneath a massive sheet of ice. As the glaciers retreated, they left behind a landscape that was almost unbelievable: deep wedges carved into the bedrock (the fjords), jagged peaks towering above the clouds, and vast reservoirs of pure water caught in mountain hollows and deep valleys.

The first people who followed the ice northward weren't looking for comfort. They were hunters and fishers who learned to read nature's temperamental language. They understood early on that to survive here, one had to work with the elements, not against them.

The Viking Age and the Sea as a Highway

While the rest of Europe saw the Norwegian mountains as a barrier, the Norsemen saw the sea as a road. The Viking Age was not just an era of raiding, but of exploration and world-class shipbuilding. Longships, built from solid oak and driven by both sail and oar, connected Norway to the rest of the world. This period laid the foundation for the Norwegian identity: boldness, endurance, and a deep respect for the resources provided by the sea and the soil.

From Hardship to "Black Gold"

For centuries, Norway was one of Europe’s poorest nations. We lived off "the silver of the sea" (herring) and the "gold of the forest" (timber). Life was a constant struggle against a harsh climate and rocky soil.

Everything changed in 1969. The discovery of oil in the North Sea transformed Norway from a small fishing and farming nation into one of the world's wealthiest societies. But unlike many others, Norway chose a different path: we decided that these resources should belong to the people. This created the "Nordic Model"—a society built on trust, equality, and a long-term perspective.

Today, Norway is a global leader in technology and sustainability, but we have never forgotten where we came from. We are returning to our roots—the purity, the mountains, and the raw materials. Whether it is renewable energy from our waterfalls, seafood from our cold currents, or mineral-rich water from hidden springs like those in Gåmosen, the "Norwegian brand" is synonymous with quality and honesty.
